The first day in Australia, our tour guide, Paul, warned us that most Americans, and some Australians for that matter, don’t like the taste of Vegi-mite, an Aussie condiment. He further warned us that McDonald’s put Vegi-mite on Big Macs and you could specially order them without it. Later that week, we visited a McDonald’s where the student in front of me ordered “One Big Mac, hold the Vegi-mite.” The worker behind the counter almost died of laughter. When she regained control of herself she managed to say “No one puts that stuff on hamburgers.” Our delegate’s face turned bright red. I didn’t think it was so funny at that point because I was standing behind him about to order a quarter-pounder, without Vegi-mite, of course.
